I imagine myself as a teenager in the 1960’s, dressed in purple Capri’s and a bright patterned, floral print top. My hair bound in a single, side ponytail by a yellow ribbon and my bangs are pixy short. I lay across my four poster bed complete with pastel pink ruffles, flipping through a 'Teen Magazine' with Paul Revere on the cover. Various albums (The Supremes, Rolling Stones, Doors) are carelessly tossed across the landscape of tangerine colored shag carpet as a record plays in the background… The walls of my bedroom are adorn with images and posters, Jimmy Hendricks, Hair, Martin Luther King Jr., The Beatles, Mother Teresa... As I listen to the music my feet sway to the rhythm, to the beat... of the song…
...That voice, a sound that is similar and unfamiliar at the same time…
Her voice sending chills up my spine, her scream rocks the vibration of my core…
She is a modern day Etta/Joplin, They are a garage band meets Otis Redding…
It is modern day…2012…and the record is the Alabama Shakes. Their sound is a powerful mix of 60’s rock and roll, blues, and Southern soul. Brittany Howard takes the lead with her poignant and intense vocals. Accompanying her are Zac Cockrell (bass), Steve Johnson (drums), and Heath Fogg (guitar). Their album Boys & Girls is an enjoyable, contemporary flashback to a fanatical style of music sadly forgotten.
The overall collection of songs on the album has the tendency to be a little flat for my musical taste…
…what I mean is each song individually is uniquely wonderful but as a compilation lacks variation. The only other tiny… little… miniature… petite flaw is a song called “Goin’ to the Party”… I absolutely adore this song, it’s quirky and right up my alley but it’s missing about 4 minutes of music…way too short!
This is a passionate album, well worth the purchase and the music produce by this band is something to be savored. The Alabama Shakes are defiantly worth "holding on" to...
...I envision myself in black leggings and a comfy grey, organic cotton t-shirt… barefoot… hot pink Nano in hand, dancing freely in the openness of my living room as her voice and their sound echo through my soul.
The body is one of the most remarkable designs in existence. I have become highly sensitive to the fact that what goes into and on my body affects its natural design functionality. So when it comes to body care I can get a little picky. So you can imagine my delight when I came across Herban while perusing one of Santa Monica’s eco fairs.
Herban is a local company owned by Dana Sue, inspired by stories of her grandmother’s hand-made soap’s, Dana was encouraged to design her own natural body care line. Using natural and organic ingredient, Dana has designed simple products with amazing essential fusions such as grapefruit/sage and eucalyptus/orange (my next purchase!).
I ordered the Herban Essentials so I could sample a little of everything and of course I loved the products! I ordered the lavender scent because I’m a sucker for anything lavender and though I thoroughly enjoyed the clay facial cleanser and the bath soak, my favorite product remains the Body Shae. There is something so special about moisturizer that leaves the skin feeling like silk. After using the Shae my skin was as soft as a baby’s bottom.
Check it out for yourself....
Walking near the shops in Waikiki I came across this phenomenal structure the Moana Surfrider...
These picture barley to justice to the lines of this beautiful architecture....
