There are those of you out there who probably think environmentally friendly design can’t be appealing. Well I’m here to tell you that you’re wrong. You see I was one of those people who believed “green” design was not very attractive. That was until I was introduced to one of the prominent designers leading the way in “green” design Kelly LaPlante.
Kelly’s design sensibilities are elegant and conscious. I always expected sustainable designs to be hard, modern lines, but Kelly’s work is livable. And when I say livable I mean it feels like a home. There are elements of soft, femininity and masculine, charm in Kelly’s work. You get a sense of this in the Venice Beach Eco Cottages, located in Venice, Ca.
Brainchild of Cynthia Foster and Karel Samson, the cottages are sustainable vacation rentals in which the three (Kelly, Cynthia, & Karel) collaborated to refurbish the 1922 structures. The cottages are featured in Kelly’s book “écologique”, which is a collection of 15 sustainable designs.
Kelly is currently working on an exclusive collection of runway-inspired tiles for Fireclay Tile, her first structural endeavor a line of chic pre-fab guesthouses and other smart structures for Sett Studio, an unbelievably beautiful 11 villa ecolodge on the island of Dominica, and, of course, Standard Magazine! (New issue comes out on March 7).
I am so happy to introduce you to Kelly LaPlante! For more information you can visit her at http://www.KellyLaPlante.com.
