Youth and a propensity for music, what a perfect combination for a voice of talent rich with soft notes emulating angelic tones. Fairly new to the music scene Ian St. Pierre has a voice of grit and velvet, with a flavor of sound somewhere in between Jack Johnson and John Mayer. I sense a bit of an old soul in the voice of a man birthing his career in music.
Here is some of what I learned In my attempt to unearth the man behind the melody of "Virus' and 'Little Tin Pieces'

How long have you been playing guitar and writing your own music?
I have been playing guitar for six years. I have been writing music for three; however, this past year is when I have begun getting really into it.

Are you formally trained?
Yes, I started off playing the electric guitar; I took electric guitar lessons for a year and then stopped. After that I picked up an acoustic and felt like it was more my stlye; haven't put it down since.

Where does your passion for music come from?
I come from a very talented, musical family. My parents were supportive with guitar and choir. I just love music and how it can have such an effect on people's lives. I simply just love music, it fills me with happiness and inspiration, so I write and play to try and spread some of that inspiration.

Who inspires you (musically)?
There are a few artists who really inspire me. One is Mat Kearney; his sound is very down to earth and I love his style and lyrics. I think our styles are kind of similar. I also really like the rap group AER. I listen to rap a lot because rap music uses lots of good poetic techniques and styles. I like songs that rhyme, I think it sounds better and is more attractive.

What are your aspirations for your music, where do you want this to go?
Inspirations for my music come from many aspects of my life. They come from my family, girlfriends, things I hear people say, things I read and many more. A lot of the time I will hear or come up with a line that I really like and just run off of it. I have a few spiral notebooks full of lyrics; however, I am really picky and only a handful usually make it onto a track.

I would love to be able to do this as a career. I don’t care for the fame, or the money; if I could perform and just make it by, I would. I love playing for people and seeing their reactions to my songs. The feeling I get when I am on stage sharing my stories with people is unlike any other.

Where are you performing next?
I am performing next in New York City. My manger Nick Carey has been making calls at bars and coffee shops for me. Starting March eighth I will be in the City playing as much as possible!

What most people don't know is that Seattle is one of the greatest cities in the world. Here is a look at some of the design Seattle offers.

love the harmonies guys

the old Macy's buildings are the best for design, they have so much character...

The cashier at Canterbury Records said to me " I heard this album is really fun." I nod and smile... I'm not sure what she's heard but when it comes to artistic expression, I tend to want to judge for myself. A person who enjoys the purpose behind the sound of the Dixie Chicks may not like the design of the tunes Metallica delivers. I personally take pleasure in listening to both artist.

"Fun album" huh... She frantically unwraps the leech like plastic, pops out the corner hinge of the CD case (Yes I still buy CD's), and inserts the round disk...

What comes next is approximately 40 minutes of pure uninhibited joy! I think "fun" is an understatement for this eclectic musing  of melodies. Consider this, YOU are five years of age and you walk into a candy store, your eye's grow intensely large as you take visual stock of all the sugary sweet treats before you. Your heart begins to race as you image the flavors of laffy taffy, crunchy purple nerds, and strawberry licorice rope taking hold of your taste buds. YOU are a kid in a candy store and Gotye is your cherry cola Bubblicious!

I would describe this collection of music like the pleasure of receiving and unexpected gift... Something you didn't know you wanted until you got it. This album is playfully unordinary, from 80's throwback to tribal funk... This record has something for everyone!

I imagine myself as a teenager in the 1960’s, dressed in purple Capri’s and a bright patterned, floral print top. My hair bound in a single, side ponytail by a yellow ribbon and my bangs are pixy short. I lay across my four poster bed complete with pastel pink ruffles, flipping through a 'Teen Magazine' with Paul Revere on the cover. Various albums (The Supremes, Rolling Stones, Doors) are carelessly tossed across the landscape of tangerine colored shag carpet as a record plays in the background… The walls of my bedroom are adorn with images and posters, Jimmy Hendricks, Hair, Martin Luther King Jr., The Beatles, Mother Teresa... As I listen to the music my feet sway to the rhythm, to the beat... of the song…

The song….

...That voice, a sound that is similar and unfamiliar at the same time…

Her voice sending chills up my spine, her scream rocks the vibration of my core…

She is a modern day Etta/Joplin, They are a garage band meets Otis Redding…

It is modern day…2012…and the record is the Alabama Shakes. Their sound is a powerful mix of 60’s rock and roll, blues, and Southern soul. Brittany Howard takes the lead with her poignant and intense vocals. Accompanying her are Zac Cockrell (bass), Steve Johnson (drums), and Heath Fogg (guitar). Their album Boys & Girls is an enjoyable, contemporary flashback to a fanatical style of music sadly forgotten.

The overall collection of songs on the album has the tendency to be a little flat for my musical taste…
…what I mean is each song individually is uniquely wonderful but as a compilation lacks variation. The only other tiny…    little…    miniature…    petite flaw is a song called “Goin’ to the Party”… I absolutely adore this song, it’s quirky and right up my alley but it’s missing about 4 minutes of music…way too short!

This is a passionate album, well worth the purchase and the music produce by this band is something to be savored. The Alabama Shakes are defiantly worth "holding on" to...

...I envision myself in black leggings and a comfy grey, organic cotton t-shirt… barefoot… hot pink Nano in hand, dancing freely in the openness of my living room as her voice and their sound echo through my soul.

You know those... obnoxious people who pull up next to you at the stop light blasting their rap music beyond loud?  And you know that’s how they always "roll" because their stereo system is dying a slow, painful death. You can literally hear the speakers crying out, "Turn it down!... Please! I want to live". Well that’s how I wanna roll, except I wouldn’t be blaring rap through the speakers; it would be
The Civil Wars! I would play them so loud that everyone on the block could hear the melodic splendor of the harmonies this duo creates.

If you haven't heard of The Civil Wars by now my guess is that you're on an island,... in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean,... hiding,... under a rock with no access to a TV, Radio, or a Satellite.

Like most, I discovered The Civil Wars while watching the Grammy’s last month and I was blown away at their 30 second performance of “Barton Hollow”, which is also the title of their first album. The lovely Joy Williams and super HOT John Paul White make up this amazing duo.

Man, Nashville sure can crank'um out…..

I’m convinced that by some fantastic, universal design these two artist were destine to come together and make beautiful music for the world to experience. The progression of the album Barton Hollow is designed in such a way that a grander story is told as one song follows the next. Music isn’t just the vocals, lyrics, melody, etc. it’s a poetic journey through the soul. And The Civil Wars… Well the journey they take us on is one of passion, regret, love, and hate. The Civil Wars have been described as “Refreshing”, “Musical Genius”, and “Provocative”. The one sad note is that their first album has only 12 songs, which forces me (oh twist my arm) to listen to the album over and over again.

I look forward to their second album (soon please!) and seeing them perform live.

Check out their rendition of “Billy Jean” on Youtube.
